December is here! That means holidays like Hanukkah (Dec. 18-26), Christmas (Dec. 25), and Kwanzaa (Dec. 26-Jan. 1), along with the first day of winter and New Year's Eve are on the way ... but there's so much more happening this month!

We might just be hungry today, but we decided it was a great time to recognize five of the foodie holidays celebrated in December ... and also highlight the local Southern Maryland businesses that make these foods best:

1. Cookie Day

You don't have to tell us twice! You can find us buying a dozen delicious chocolate chip cookies today at The Bakist in North Beach to share with the kids ... maybe. Gluten free? Try the delicious goodies at Twisted Bakesters in Chesapeake Beach. Dec. 4

2. Have a Bagel Day

Celebrate this delicious ring of doughy goodness with a trip to The Beanery in California. Get it slathered with cream cheese or try a delicious breakfast quiche there. And don't forget to "toast" to the great bagel! Dec. 11

3. Cupcake Day

Our favorite place for cupcakes in Chesapeake Beach? Butterflies & Wishes Tea & Sweets! Have you tried them there? If not, today's the perfect day to stop for a decadent vanilla filled cupcake.  Dec. 15

4. Maple Syrup Day

I mean, did you need an excuse to take the kids out for pancakes? If so, this is it! Our favorite breakfast spots for pancakes in Lusby? Frying Pan has been delighting Southern Maryland with their incredibly tasty breakfasts for as long as I can remember. Once you're there? Drench those pancakes in maple syrup and enjoy. Dec. 17

5. Hamburger Day

Is there anything better than a bacon cheeseburger at Five Guys? We certainly don't think so! National Hamburger Day is the perfect excuse to take off from a night of cooking and treat the family to dinner out at Five Guys in California. Yum. Never mind that there seems to be a few Hamburger Days throughout the year ... we choose to celebrate them all! Dec. 21
