Beach Combing, DIY Windchimes & More at Piney Point Lighthouse Museum

Press Release from St. Mary’s County Government

By Jenna Guzman, Communications Director - St. Mary's County Government July 30, 2024

LEONARDTOWN, MD – Families, kids, and adults of all ages can enjoy free outdoor activities while visiting Piney Point Lighthouse Museum & Historic Park on the second Saturdays of the month. Modeled loosely after "Forest School" learning styles in Denmark and Sweden, the Nature & Forest Play for All Ages Series encourages discovering nature through hands-on, tactile, “no right or wrong way to play” experiences. These activities encourage visitors to explore nature and the outdoors through curiosity and play. Age is not a factor; adults need to connect with nature in relaxing, simple ways, just as much as children do!

Themed activities will be held on the following dates:

  • August 10, 2024 (12 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. families & children; 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. adults): Beach Combing. We’ll be turning over cove rocks, looking for crabs, fish and other organisms, and discussing the smaller ecosystem around us. Sand and sediment microorganism viewing under a camera microscope is an option. Participants should wear clothing and shoes that can get wet.
  • September 14, 2024 (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.): FamilyFest on the Potomac. Join us for a fun day filled with family activities and food at Piney Point Lighthouse Museum’s Family Fun Fest on the Potomac. Formally RetroFest, our activities will have a retro focus, such as rock pet painting and adoption, retro games like jacks and can tosses, and tie dye painting.
  • Saturday, November 9, 2024 (12 p.m. – 2 p.m.): Outdoor Autumn Play Skills & Forest Stories. Families, teens, and kids of all ages are welcome to bring a snack and picnic! Optional activities include a natural windchime craft, pumpkin bowling, leaf stamping, leaf people drawings for holiday cards, naturally scented sensory bins with wooden measuring tools, DIY autumn spice playdough, rock painting, DIY Tic-Tac-Toe kits.
  • December 14, 2024 (12 p.m. – 2 p.m.): Tale of the Christmas Spider. Enjoy the Christmas Spider story and ornament building with hot chocolate. Learn more about our winter insect friends.
